He 'Ohana Up Close
He 'Ohana Dance
All of Hawai'i, especially the community of Waimänalo, should be proud of the efforts of He 'Ohana Makou. What started off as a backyard idea, turned into one of the most beautiful experiences of a lifetime. Members of He 'Ohana Makou, We Are Family became the talk of the entire 26th Annual Northwest Folklife Festival. We performed in front of packed audiences and our message of 'Ohana and Aloha touched the lives of everyone in attendance. Transplanted Hawaiians and Hawaiians at heart were moved to tears when they witnessed a program filled with Hawaiian Music and Hula. There wasnt a dry eye in the audience when the POWER of family surrounded them. From our very first intimate performance at Borders Books & Music in Tacoma, Washington, to the thousands at Folklife, to the Muckleshoot Indian Reservation in Auburn, Washington and the Tsartlip First Nation on Vancouver Island, B. C., we received standing ovations.
When He 'Ohana Makou began our fund-raising campaign, we wrote to both the State of Hawai'i and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and never received a response from either entity. We knew then, that we were on our own. With the support of our community, family and friends, we pulled off the most emotional, thought-provoking show Hawai'i has ever exported. Our cause was pure and our reception was genuine.
This Mission of Aloha has shown us that the World needs to experience the magic of Aloha and spirit of 'Ohana. We are committed to make our group grow and multiple in numbers. We will take these feelings to whoever will allow us to share. Our 'aina is changing and attitudes are different. We are trying so hard to keep in step with the Mainland, we are losing bits and pieces of our soul. We pledge to continue to spread our message of Aloha and the importance of Family. Branches will be created in different communities in Hawai'i, with the Waimänalo branch as the foundation core. We also plan to visit Hawaiian communities throughout the United States with music, hula, news & information, arts & crafts and 'ono Hawaiian Food. Hawai'i needs to let our transplanted Hawaiians know that we have not forgotten them. What a better way then to let families reach out and touch others, not a government-funded entity. We will continue and expand our relationship with Native American Nations. As the Kanaka Maoli approach another plateau in our existence, we can learn from our Native brothers & sisters.
Our Mission of Aloha also showed us that our concept has no ethnic barriers. He 'Ohana
Makou has the potential to have international branches. Think about it! "He Ohana Makou,
WE Are Family." A nonprofit Foundation will also be created and major corporate companies
will be asked for funding assistance.
If you are seriously interested in creating a He 'Ohana Makou branch in your area, please
contact us and together we can make it happen.
Mahalo a nui loa to all for making this possible
